Quick answer: An Iowa landlord must return the security deposit, or send a written statement of the specific reasons for keeping any part, within 30 days after the tenancy ends and the tenant gives a mailing address or delivery instructions. A landlord that misses the 30 days loses the right to withhold anything.

This Iowa security deposit return deadline calculator applies Iowa Code 562A.12. Enter the date the tenancy ended and, if the tenant gave an address later, that date: it shows the 30-day deadline, the days left, whether a statement was on time and the most a court can add for bad-faith retention. It does not decide whether a deduction is allowed.

What does this deposit deadline calculator check?

The calculator adds 30 calendar days to the later of the day the tenancy ended and the day the tenant gave a mailing address or delivery instructions, then moves a last day that is a Sunday to the Monday, as Iowa Code 4.1(34) provides. It does not know when anything was mailed or whether the address was given in writing. The landlord’s own clock is the one that matters for the deposit, so a tenant who wants an early start should give an address in writing the day the tenancy ends. Keep a copy and note the date you sent it. How much a landlord may collect is a separate question: see the Iowa security deposit limit calculator.
