Why state-by-state matters
Most US legal and tax questions don't have a national answer — the actual rule depends on which state you're in, and the rules vary more than most people expect. Two states can use the same term for a legal concept and mean something completely different by it. FigureMyTax builds one calculator per topic, with a dedicated page for every state, backed by that state's own statute or official court source rather than a generalized national average.
What each calculator gives you
Every state page shows a working calculator with your own numbers, the exact statute or court rule behind the figure, worked examples you can check against the source yourself, and a downloadable PDF report. Where a state sets a fixed formula, we show it in full. Where a state instead leaves the amount to a court's judgment, we explain what the court actually weighs and give a defensible estimate based on it — never a number we invented.
How we keep it accurate
Every figure on this site traces to a primary source: the state's own code, an official court rule, or, where no formula exists, the court's own published standard. We link that source directly from every page, flag it clearly when a state has recently changed its law, and periodically re-check every figure against the current official text. See our full methodology for exactly how this works.
