Quick answer: Michigan has no spousal support formula. Under MCL 552.23(1), when a judgment of divorce or separate maintenance is entered and the estate and effects awarded to either party are insufficient for the suitable support and maintenance of that party and of any children in that party’s care, the court may award spousal support out of the real and personal estate of either party, in gross or otherwise, as the court considers just and reasonable, after considering the ability of either party to pay, the character and situation of the parties and all the other circumstances of the case. The court may later revise the amount or payment on a party’s petition (MCL 552.28). For child support, alimony paid between the parents is not counted as the recipient’s income but remains the payer’s income.

What this calculator shows

The calculator checks the statutory threshold and builds a monthly ceiling from the shortfall and the other spouse’s ability to pay. It does not predict an award. The threshold and factors are in when spousal support is awarded, revision in revising spousal support and the interplay with child support in spousal support and child support.

Property, child support and spousal support

Spousal support depends on what estate each party receives, so the property division comes first. See the Michigan property division calculator and the Michigan child support calculator.

Spousal support across Michigan

The statutes apply in every Michigan circuit court, from Detroit, Grand Rapids, Warren, Sterling Heights, Ann Arbor or Lansing. The statute calls the award “spousal support” and the revision statute calls it alimony.

Frequently asked questions

How is alimony calculated in Michigan?

There is no formula. When the estate awarded is insufficient for suitable support, the court may award spousal support as it considers just and reasonable, after considering ability to pay, the parties' character and situation and all other circumstances (MCL 552.23).

How long does Michigan spousal support last?

The statute sets no maximum term; the court decides the amount and how it is paid, in gross or otherwise.

Can Michigan spousal support be changed?

Yes. On petition of either party the court may revise and alter the judgment as to the amount or payment of alimony, subject to MCL 552.17.

Does Michigan count alimony as income for child support?

Alimony paid between the parents is not the recipient's income for child support but remains the payer's income.

Is Michigan spousal support available if I get enough property?

The statute authorizes it when the estate and effects awarded are insufficient for suitable support and maintenance.
